Isao Hirai (1934 - ) was born in Sapporo, Japan. The following year, he moved with his family to Brazil. In 1958, he moved to Venezuela where he worked as a modeler for eight years. Hirai moved to the United States in 1966, first making models at The Ralph M. Parsons Company and later at the Scale Model Company. Since 1974, he has been president of the Scale Model Company, making models for the construction and aerospace industries. He has also built models for museums in Germany, Austria, Japan, Taiwan, Mexico and the United States, including the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. and the San Diego Aero-Space Museum, where one of his two 1/25th scale models of the Challenger is on display.
