Sentaro Iwaki (1893-1988) was born in Kyoto, Japan. Trained in garden design by the traditional apprentice system, he established his own company, the Iwaki Landscape Company in 1953. Iwaki was awarded the National Medal for Japanese Garden Landscape by Emporer Hirohito in 1971, an award from the Japanese Landscape Academy in 1978 and the coveted Yoshida Isoya Award in 1980. He designed gardens for residences of Japanese industrialists and politicans as well as gardens at important government buildings and major hotels in Japan.
