Frank Stella (1936 - ) was born in Malden, Massachusetts. He attended Princeton University before moving to New York City in the late 1950s. He was first recognized in art circles in the early 1960s for his impersonal paintings that were composed of straight, parallel, monochrome stripes. Since 1974, he has focused on brightly-colored metal constructions. "Long Beach," one of his "Circuit" series, can be seen in the alcove of the office tower at 444 S. Flower Street.
