1955. Roger Noble Burnham, MacArthur Park. The shapes at the base of the fountain represent the Philippine Islands.

Text of inscription on the left wall: Soldier - Battles are not won by arms alone/ There must exist above all a/ Spiritual impulse - a will to victory/ In war there can be no substitute but victory.

Text of inscription on the right wall: Statesman - Could I have but a line a century/ Hence crediting a contribution/ To the advance of peace. I would gladly yield every honor which has been accorded by war.
